SDSU-Imperial Valley Campus Instructional Student Assistant
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Under supervision, Instructional Student Assistants
perform teaching, grading or tutoring duties for the majority of work hours in a given
appointment in a given academic department or equivalent administrative unit over
the course of an academic term.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and Abilities: Incumbents must possess the ability to learn and perform assigned work; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; and accept responsibility. Completion of specific coursework may be required in order to teach, grade or tutor a course.
Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student. On-Campus Work-Study Instructional Student Assistants must meet the eligibility requirements of the Federal Work-Study Program, as determined by the campus' financial aid office.
EXCEPTIONS: Exceptions to minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the hiring department/authority.

HIRING CRITERIA: Under the supervision of the Retention Coordinator, Instructional Student Assistants will perform tutoring duties, and other duties as assigned, for the hours they will be solicited to work at the Imperial Valley Campus of San Diego State University. The tutor\'s role will be to teach students how to study more effectively. Furthermore, tutors will be responsible for imparting to their fellow tutees college survival skills that will help them attain their academic goals such as developing effective time management skills, developing critical thinking skills, and getting them active in the learning process by advising students how to successfully master their academic workload. Applicants must possess the ability to perform the assigned work. They should possess the ability to work well with staff and students and be responsible. Completion of specific coursework applicants plan to tutor may be required. Applicants must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA. They must also have received a B or better in the subject area(s) they wish to tutor. A copy of unofficial transcripts must be submitted for verification. International transcripts are welcomed; however, they would need to be evaluated beforehand. One semester of tutoring is highly recommended.
Applicants must be enrolled at least half-time in university coursework or thesis research.
PERCENTAGE OR HOURS OF APPOINTMENT: Varies, depending on student demand and/or availability of tutor (1 to 20 hours per week).
DEADLINE TO APPLY AND PROCEDURES FOR NOTIFICATION: On-going until all positions are filled. Applications submitted by October 20th will be given priority. All applications will be reviewed, and qualified applicants will be contacted for an interview. All offers are contingent upon budget and student demand.
