Semester Abroad Requirement

"All International Business majors are required to complete a semester abroad. Students may satisfy the requirement by studying abroad through one of our approved exchange programs. Students must complete 12 units of coursework in the target language. At least two out of the four courses must be upper division business courses. Students must successfully complete all four courses with a passing grade otherwise the study abroad requirement will not have been met. Student must be upper division in the major prior to submitting the application to go abroad. Exceptions may be made in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. Unapproved study abroad programs will not meet the requirement.

As an alternative to studying abroad at an approved exchange program, students may choose to complete an internship abroad in the region and language of emphasis. In order to meet this requirement, students must complete a minimum of 250 hours of work abroad." (2009-20010 General Catalog SDSU, p. 275)

In order to study abroad you must:

• Attend the mandatory orientations 1 year prior to your intended study abroad.
• Have achieved upper division status in the major by the beginning of the semester prior to intended study abroad term (studying abroad on your last semesters IS NOT recommended).
• Have completed or be currently registered for 2 approved 300/400-level language courses one semester prior to departure.
• Have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA that will be maintained up to the point of departure to abroad institution in addition to a minimum 2.0 semester GPA the semester prior to departure.
• Have good academic standing at the time of application submission.

IB students with Spanish and North America regional/cultural studies emphasis can only go to the approved universities in Mexico listed below.

In addition to Mexico, IB students with Spanish and Latin America regional/cultural studies emphasis can go to any of the other countries listed below as well. Please note that not all universities are available for any given semester. Please check with study abroad adviser each semester for options.

• Argentina - Universidad del Cema in Buenos Aires and Universidad Catolica de Cordoba in Cordoba
• Chile - Universidad de Valparaiso in Viña del Mar and Universidad del Desarrollo (UDD) in Santiago
• Costa Rica - Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica (ITCR) in Cartago
• Ecuador - Universidad de San Francisco de Quito in Cumbaya
• Peru - Universidad San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL) in Lima

Note: If the 1st of the month falls on a weekend or a holiday, Study Abroad Application Deadline will be on the first business day following.
